Oldhammer in the Jerz!

Hi all,

I've been crazy busy with life but have also been getting alot of Oldhammering in and finally have a minute to get a new Blog Post out.

The first weekend in November saw the Gathering of Oldhammer types in the Great State of New Jersey for the Oldhammer in the Jerz' event...which basically filled the roll of OHNW2017.  the event was pulled together by Nigel and his local crew and the venue was a nice Masons lodge that had all the comforts of home and plenty of space for gaming.

I had the opportunity to play mostly Rogue Trader games and had a lot of fun doing it....but there were plenty of other games going on as well as much trading and painting and general hobby work and banter.

Chaos Renegade #19 Seasonal Special

Hi all,

In the run up to Oldhammer in the Jerz (OHNW 2017) I'm attempting to finish up a couple of smallish projects.  Once of these is completing Chaos Renegade Squad 2.  I have just two figures to finish to complete this squad and today I'm happy to share with you the first of those two.

As you may have noticed with the last Boar Rider and the Averland figures from the last post I have been working with my system to paint Black cloth and armor a lot lately.  And since it has been working out I decided to apply that technique to one of my Renegades.

With the bulk of the armor color picked I turned my thoughts to what the contrasting color should be...and I toyed with Green....turquoise...yellow...and finally I decided to ask my daughter her opinion (my wife, who is my normal color consultant, is out of town)... She said "Dad, its practically Halloween! try Orange!"  So I did! and I think it worked out well.

Olhammer in the New World 2016

Howdy all,

Sorry for the long delay between posts...my fall has been enormously busy with Real Life and, frankly, my painting mojo has been at a low ebb for the last 6-8 weeks.  That said I have been accomplishing a fair amount of other hobby related tasks...mostly getting movement trays for most of my troops and magnetizing bases.  But that is the subject of another post for another time...The big news since my last post is that at the beginning of October we had an amazing weekend of Oldschool gaming at Oldhammer in the New World event.

This year the event was held at Huzzah Hobbies is Ashburn, Virginia and we had gaming spread over three days.  We had about 20 attendees and played a whole host of quality Old school gaming.  While I didnt take enough photos of any one game to pull together a true battle report...I did take enough pictures of the entire event to give you a flavor of the doings.

The first gaming to take place was a quick game of Donnybrook between my Bretonnians and Airborne Grove's Classic Chaos force.

This was followed by a free wheeling Rogue Trader game with all the early arrival involved...the climax of this fight (for me) was the engagement of my Renegade Squad by Ben's Eldar Harlequins.

Gaming on Friday continued until 10om when the shop closed but picked right back up again the following morning...and i immediately got stuck into a truly epic game of Space Hulk put on my Kronos and his pal Buford.

Once my Squad of Termies was finally reprocessed into new Genetic material for the growing Genestealer threat I moved onto a game of WFB against Rusty and his Orcs.  Now Rusty and I have been trying to pull off this game for the last three years...and we finally managed it this year.  This was a 2500 pt battle between the Greenskin horde and my Dwarf army.  We settled into what we expected to be a game that would last all afternoon...but that was not the case.  Rusty's army contained a giant who quickly shattered my line and caused my general (!!!!) to rout off the table...the game rapidly went down hill from here...it was quite embarrassing...

...but a lot of fun

After this humiliating defeat I resigned the rest of my day to simply observing the rest of the great gaming that was going on around me...here is a selection of photos...

All in all it was a wonderful weekend...as always it is great to catch up with the Core OHNW crew and to meet plenty of new faces.  The staff of Huzzah Hobbies was tremendously helpful and the hard work of Andrew in organizing thing really paid off in a great event.

Blue's Year End Re-Cap. 2015...what a long strange trip it's been!

As with many Oldhammer Bloggers this seems to be the right time to review the last twelve months and take a look at what I was able to accomplish and perhaps look to set some goals for the coming year.

I'll look at things in fairly broad categories:

• Painting
• Gaming
• 2016 Goals

Bretonnina Knights...Finally finished...?

Well...they made it onto the table at Oldhammer In the New  World...but they weren't really finished.  They didn't have their shields and the bases were only sanded...they weren't done.

...of course they paid me back for this indignity by running off the table at the first chance they got...so...well I guess I learned something there.

Anyway.  Now they are done...the cowardly bastards.  I'm certainly hoping that they prove a little more resilient in their next encounter.

Anyway...lets look to the pictures.  Here are the first half of the unit.

Oldhammer in the New World Event Recap Day 2

After the epically long gaming session on Friday night I woke on Saturday and shuffled off to breakfast in a daze.  The water eggs and weak coffee did little to improve my mood...but by sheer force of will I was back down in the event venue by 9:30am...

...and the sight that great me gave me enough energy to carry on through the rest of the day!

After we had all stumbled off too bed, the intrepid Brian K. had stayed up to set up the enormous New Alamo Table that he had built over the previous couple of months.  This amazing set up was front and center in the room and was bound to be the center of attention for the entire day....at least for me.

In the morning and early afternoon....which I only vague recall due to lack of sleep and coffee, there were a number of other games that took place as well.  For one the Green skin horde of Sean S. took on a combined force of Chaos (provided by ABG) and Dark Elves (provided by Adyer).  This game took place on the excellent table provided by Rusty and proved a fun and lively game...unless you were the orcs...in which case there was also a lot of dieing and Running away...

Sadly I failed to capture even a single picture of this game...so I will have to refer you to the excellent report posted by Sean that covers the action in some detail.  It can be found HERE. 

I believe there were also some other gaming going on...maybe Heroquest...?  Maybe BattleMasters...? Like I said its all kind of a blur at this point.  

What I do recall clearly is the siege of the New Alamo!  Brian K. really pulled something special together with this game.  Its sheer size was impressive and the fact that it ran so smoothly for such a long time is testament to the amount of work and forethought that he put into it.  The action was fast and furious with the momentum of battle swinging from one force to the other with shocking regularity...Lets look at some pics!

For Awhile it seemed as though the Orks would obviously prevail...but with stubborn resistance by forces like the Penal Legion seen above and the pesky Space Marines that wouldn't die the battle seesawed back and forth.  At one point Santa Orka Himself mounted the walls and entered the enclosure...only to be jumped by an Imperial Assassin and a Murder bot.

But in the end the Imperial forces were able to maintain control of the central landing platform that was the goal of the attacking forces.

Suffice to say that great fun was had by all and this will go down in my gaming history as one of the best games that I have had the privilege to participate in.

In addition to the Big Alamo game, Saturday also saw the Event painting contest.  There were many fun entries for all the categories and a great number of very well painted figures involved.  Again I apparently forgot to take any pictures of these goings-on and so will have to refer you to ABGs excellent Blog post about the contest.  You can find that HERE. 

The overall winner of the painting contest was Mike C.  Who entered an amazing RT halfling cook model that was head and shoulders above the rest despite it diminutive size.  As a prize Mike received a large Warhammer as a Trophy.  Being the gracious guy that he is, Mike decided to leave the hammer with us to pass along as the award for the next contest as well...but not before leaving his mark on it for posterity.

The fun didn't wrap up until well after Midnight...and driven out of the room by the thumping bass of the Nigerian Baby Shower that was (inexplicably) still going on next door I scooted up to my room and quickly passed out with visions of burning Drew-bots and imperial murder-bots filling my dreams.
