The Rest of Averland...:)

Howdy all,

As I mentioned once many moons ago while I was in the throes of the Lead Painters League...and before I shattered my ankle and ruined my summer...I was asked by LAF member thebinman to paint up a skirmish warband for him.  The figures he chose to send me include some of the all time great sculpts from the early years of Citadel and Marauder.  The start of this commission were the 5 figures I painted for the LPL seen here:

As you can see thebinman requested that this warband have an Averland theme...which has proven to be a fun challenge as both yellow and black are quite difficult to highlight properly IMO.  These first five figures include a diversity of races that is not seen in the rest of the warband which focuses on additional human troops and the addition of one fierce looking warhound.  Lets take a look at them after being primed with my normal dark grey automotive primer and having the base color added to flesh areas (Tallarn Flesh + brown).

As you can see its a wonderful eclectic mix of sculpts including some great puff and slash dressed figures as well as some "lower class" Empire riff raff.  I could name off which of these are my favorites, but to be honest with you as I get further into the painting the more I like each and everyone of them.  The sculpting and casting quality can be a bit dodgy at times but they all have great oldschool character.

As with most of my painting projects the first thing I have to do is nail down what the color scheme will be like...in this case which prtions of each model will be yellow, black, white, metal, or other.  Since Black Yellow and White are the primary colors I started with those first.

Now that I have a clearer picture in my mind of what each paint job will end up looking like I can move on to getting the rest of the base colors in place and then start highlighting everything up.

Now that the cold weather is starting to settle in here in Vermont and the nights are growing longer I find myself spending more and more time at the painting desk...which is a nice change from the "painters block" I suffered through much of the summer and fall.  I really look forward to finishing these up and I'm sure thebinman is looking forward to getting them back as well.

Cheers for now!

  1. I'm very excited to see what you do with these Blue - the chap nonchelantly shouldering his sword is one of my very favourite Empire models - can't wait!

    1. I completely agree...he is one of the best. I'm not sure what to do with his little vest/jacket thing....right now I'm painting it black but may opt for another color in the end.

  2. Reminds me of my Averland warband for Mordheim. As I recall I had a couple of Halfling archers. Unfortunately they suffered from an exceptionally high fatality rate and I was forced to disband 'em. Hope these fellows fare better!
