Chaos Renegades ...Squad 3... number 9.

 Hi all,

Another quick palette cleanser as I transition between projects.  After cranking out the Chaos Champion that I shared in last post for the Scale Creep challenge, I decided to keep the Chaos Mojo flowing for another day and bust out another Chaos Renegade.

Progress on the 3rd squad of Renegades has been a bit of slog....not because I don't want to paint renegades...but just because I've been distracted by other large projects.

But here is Renegade number 9 for Squad 3...almost there.  I will add one more heavy weapon trooper in the future to wrap up this squad.

Blue's 2019 recap post!!! What a long strange trip it's been...

Hi all,

I wanted to take the opportunity to post a brief recap of my "Year in Hobby: 2019 edition"  ...since that seems to be the type of thing you do at the end of one year and the beginning of another.

It was a productive year of hobbying for me.  I painted a quite a few figures...worked on some terrain pieces...had good games with good friends ...and finally made it to BOYL for the first time.

One of the highlights of the year for me in 2019 was my participation in the second iteration of the Old World Army Challenge.  You may remember that for the first OWAC I painted up a small army of Wood elfs....this year I returned to my absolute favorite army and all but finished it off!  The Puff and Slash Dwarf army!

Chaos Renegades...DREADNOUGHT!!

Hi all,

I had planned to sit on this post for awhile...but I'm so damn excited about this figure that I can't wait!

Chaos Renegade...Squad 3...number 8

Hi all,

Well...I had fully intended to start bombarding you with posts about the puff and slash dwarfs...but I've gotten sidetracked again.  After completing the last two Renegades...and receiving a couple of new paints in the mail...I decided to crank out one more...just one more! :)

I recently chatted with one of my painting heroes, Stone Cold Lead, when he mentioned the purple recipe he recently used for the Ion Age Retained Knights...and I immediately ordered the paints he recommended and I decided to give it a try.  Purple has been one of my long term problem colors...and I hoped this was the info I needed to get over that hurdle.

For my first attempt with this new color I chose one of the classic Renegade sculpts, Three Eyes!

Chaos Renegade...Squad 3...numbers 6 and 7

Hi all,

After a marathon of Puff and Slash dwarf painting (much more about this to come) I decided to take a brief break from that and finished up two additional Renegade Marines for the 3rd squad.

The first of these is one of those crazy bright paint jobs that I love to explore with the Renegade models....the second is much more subdued.

This one is one of the Heavy Weapons marines that is rocking a wicked cool visor...which became a bit of a hang up for me in the painting process.  I had had the majority of this figure painted for several months...just the visor was holding me up.  But after chatting with some talented folks I'm lucky enough to know, I developed a plan for conquering the visor and I dove in!  In the end it was fairly straight forward and not as complicated as I had feared.

So here he is...Heavy weapon number two for this squad and trooper number 6.

Chaos Renegade ...Squad 3...number 5

Hi all,

After the Marathon of the OWAC I needed a brief respite from the grind of my puff and slash dwarf army...there is still much to do there and the next blog post will cover my recent efforts in that regard...but this post will see a return to the much loved Chaos Renegades that I have been working on for a couple of years now.

This change of pace allowed me to work with some different colors and styles and to work on just one figure at a time!  What a crazy idea!? It seemed so quick once I got down to it!

As the halfway point of renegade Squad 3 I chose to return to the excellent Nurgle Renegade range and picked one of my absolute favorite figures....the one that looks like a natural leader among his foul brethren...lovingly titled "Plaguebearer Head 1"

Now...as you have come to expect from me I opted for some particularly un-Nurgle colors for this guy.  Looking at the other four members of Squad 3 I found that it was lacking something from the Red-ish range so opted for a deep rich red for the base color...nicely contrasted by the tan trim and de-saturated blue for his skin tone.

Here is how he ended up....

BOYL 2019....I finally made it! (Pic Heavy)

(Note: this is in no way a comprehensive description of the events going on at Foundry and Warhammer World over the weekend...If I failed to mention you or your wonderful game I apologize...no slight intended...you know I love you all!!! :) )

Well...Its a festivus Miracle!!  I've finally found a way to attend a Bring Out Your Lead (BOYL) event!!  BOYL was the first and is largest of the purely Oldhammer events that happens every year.  It was first held in 2012....and every year since then I have been dissapointed to NOT be able to attend.

...But that all changed this year!  Due to some unexpected life changes in the Blue household the opportunity presented it self and I jumped at the option to attend.  This decision was made rather last minute (2 weeks before the event) but I was able to get a reasonably priced ticket and impose upon my friends Airborne Grove and Bulldog Lopez for transportation and a place to crash.

My BOYL experience actually started at Warhammer World were I joined a number of other Oldhammer compatriots for fantastic Rogue trader Realms of Chaos Warband Rumble...hosted by Colin.

Chaos Renegades...3rd Squad...a beginning...

Howdy all,

***Insert excuse for long time between posts here***

Alright...now that we have that out of the way...

This fall has been a flurry of old school gaming activity and I have a lot of catching up to do so lets carry on with the Renegades.

As part of an abortive attempt to take part in the Old World Army Challenge-Squad Sprint...I have completed the first few models for Renegade Squad 3.

I started with the heavy weapon trooper for the squad and opted to go with this multi-melta guy in a fairly muted color scheme.  In addition to the heavy weapon trooper I went for two great "Nurgle Marines" and, of course, painted them in the least Nurgle-y paint jobs I could think of.  For Old Tentacle Face I went with Yellow and Blue and I like to think of the Tentacle arm flamer guy as a corrupted Storm trooper...hence the white armor.

Oldhammer in the Jerz!

Hi all,

I've been crazy busy with life but have also been getting alot of Oldhammering in and finally have a minute to get a new Blog Post out.

The first weekend in November saw the Gathering of Oldhammer types in the Great State of New Jersey for the Oldhammer in the Jerz' event...which basically filled the roll of OHNW2017.  the event was pulled together by Nigel and his local crew and the venue was a nice Masons lodge that had all the comforts of home and plenty of space for gaming.

I had the opportunity to play mostly Rogue Trader games and had a lot of fun doing it....but there were plenty of other games going on as well as much trading and painting and general hobby work and banter.

The following is a dump of photos that showcase some of my favorite moments of the weekend.

Chris M's Amazing Ogre force

Dyer's Crimson Fists

Dustin's Imperial Guard

Mordhiem Table

Jeff K's Nobs

Orks Take Cover

Musical Interlude by Dave!

Awesome Pulp Alley Game on this great table

Renegades ADVANCE!

The Ugly Crowd!
It was a really fun event and it was great to catch up with so many excellent New World Oldhammer Types...Special thanks to Nigel for pulling it all together and to my boy Dustin for all the great Games and good times.

Cheers,

Blue

Chaos Renegade #19 Seasonal Special

Hi all,

In the run up to Oldhammer in the Jerz (OHNW 2017) I'm attempting to finish up a couple of smallish projects.  Once of these is completing Chaos Renegade Squad 2.  I have just two figures to finish to complete this squad and today I'm happy to share with you the first of those two.

As you may have noticed with the last Boar Rider and the Averland figures from the last post I have been working with my system to paint Black cloth and armor a lot lately.  And since it has been working out I decided to apply that technique to one of my Renegades.

With the bulk of the armor color picked I turned my thoughts to what the contrasting color should be...and I toyed with Green....turquoise...yellow...and finally I decided to ask my daughter her opinion (my wife, who is my normal color consultant, is out of town)... She said "Dad, its practically Halloween! try Orange!"  So I did! and I think it worked out well.

Reactor Raid...Chaos Fett in Action!!!

***NOTE: Most Pictures Converted back to Color from B&W...I think its better...you?***

Here is a quick break from the Terrain building marathon I've been on...

...today my son talked me into a quick RT-lite game...honestly, it didn't take much convincing.

I let him pick out five figures to be his bad-ass squad (he Chose Chaos Bobba Fett and some Ork boyz with big guns!) and I pulled together some Battle Systems Terrain and an Imperial force to attempt to halt Fett and his minions.

The following bat rep is a...will fill you in on the rest...In a Comic-fied retelling of the harrowing deeds of the day...

2016 Year in Review...

Well...

I'm a bit late with this post but here goes....this is my attempt to summarize my hobby efforts for the past year and to look forward to what I hope to accomplish for 2017.

As with my previous review I'll address things in 3 broad categories:
  • Gaming
  • Painting
  • 2017 goals
Gaming,
2016 was a great year for gaming in Blue's world...I played more games this year than I have in a very long time.  This included a bi-weekly gaming session with my local gaming partner during which we explored Space Hulk, Frostgrave, Dragon Rampant, and Rogue trader games.  I also played a fantastic game of RT with some of my other local gaming friends early in the year.

Chaos Renegade #17

Hi all,

I still have to pull together my end of the year review for 2016...but this guy was done before New Years so he should really be posted up before my summary is complete...so here he is.

Once again this is quite a unique Renegade model...this one a Kev Adams sculpt (the knee pad faces are a dead give away) once again he was a joy to paint and I chose to use one of my new favorite colors, a rich burnt orange.

Here he is with the rest of squad...Individual shots are below.

Chaos Renegade #16

Well...here we are again.

The renegade painting is coming easy right now so I'm continuing to ride that wave while it lasts.

#16 is another classic Sculpt...This guy comes from the non-denominational portion of the Renegade range.  In the catalog he is known as One Eye

Really a fantastic Sculpt...the leering skull like head with the down turned horns is very effective and suitably creepy.  My thoughts for color schemes went all over the place with figure...and in the end landed in the weirdest place I could have imagined!

My thought was to employ some of the subtle colors I've used on some of my Bretonnian figures...but the highlighting got away from me and the colors transitioned into something different...but some how more compelling.

Here he is...

I hadn't really planned on a second Pink Renegade at this point...but I think the tone of this one is so different from the more "bubblegum" color of Renegade #13 that they may still be able to remain in the same squad.

Anyway...Cheers for now...

Chaos Renegade #15 ...Tanglefoot

Hi all,

I'm back with yet another Renegade.  While I had intended #14 to be a filler piece while I readied a unit of dwarfs for priming and painting ...I couldn't help to squeeze in one more of these guys....plus the prep work on the dwarfs is taking longer than expected...

As I've mentioned before I have about a dozen Renegades primed and ready to go on my desk so my habit has been to pick them up randomly...decide on one that strikes my fancy at that moment and get to work on it.  This time the figure that stood out to me was one of the Nurgle Marines...in the 1991 Blue Catalog he is called "Tentacle Arm Skull Head" NICE!  This guy has got it going on!

Chaos Renegade #14...back on the Crazy Train...

Hello all,

I'm back after yet another long hiatus.  I could make excuses but whats the point...luckily I have not been completely devoid of hobby since my last post.  Just the opposite in fact...I have relocated my painting "mojo" and now have a variety of projects percolating along...in addition to that I have had some fantastic gaming with the Monolith as well as with my local gaming crew.  So I have plenty of things to blog about...I just need to sit my ass down and write a bit more often.

Anyway...to the point.  Among the other things that I have been working on I managed to squeeze in another Chaos Renegade.  There is so much amazing sculpting in this range...amazing and varied. This renegade is no exception.  His pose is quite unique and the fact that he has a traditional space marine beakie helmet and at pink horror arm only make him more interesting.

Here he is in all his glory...

As you can see I went with a gray and orange color scheme for the armor and a dark pink for the mutated arm.  The gray is quite similar to the that used on Renegade #9...and when I published the blog post for that figure I had a couple of requests for a walk thru...so I managed to remember to take a number of pictures as I worked on this guy so that I can share the process.

Now I should start by saying there is nothing special (or efficient) about the way I paint...I use a lot of layers...there are almost certainly much quicker ways to paint a figure...but this is the result that I prefer and that's a good enough for me.

As with almost all my figures, this one was primed with dark gray auto primer.  Then I set about blocking out the the base colors...I like to get each base color established, this helps me think about the overall color scheme, and then I can highlight each color individually.

As you might imagine I started with the Gray base color which I applied to the large open armor surfaces.

For this I used the old Citadel foundation color Adeptus Battlegrey

Next was the Orange Base coat...for this I used Vallejo Panzer Aces Light Rust (301)...this was applied to the edging of the armor and on a portion of the backpack.

And this was followed by applying Bolt Gun metal on the ribbing of the armor as well as hoses, back pack vents, and weapons

Now with all the base colors in place (other than his mutated arm which I will do last) I set about highlighting the gray.  The first highlight consisted of Vallejo Game Color Cold Grey

To increase the contrast I started mixing in a much lighter gray in the form of Vallejo Game Color Stonewall Grey

Now we are getting somewhere!  Finally I used straight stone wall grey for the final highlight and at this point the figure is really starting to pop well.

Feeling satisfied with the gray, I moved on to highlighting the Orange portions of the armor.  This was accomplished by mixing in a bit of Vallejo Panzer Aces Yellowish Rust (303) in increasing amounts.

As you might imagine the next highlight was straight Yellowish Rust and then I started to mix in a Rich yellow from Reaper...Palomino Gold

When I was content with the Orange I moved back to the metals.  For the "silver" portions all I did was give them a black wash.  For the Gold I used Vallejo Old Gold which was highlighted by mixing in Silver...and then it was washed with Sepia wash...quick effective metals.

At this point the figure was pretty much complete...except for the Mutant arm...and here I ran into some trouble.  My first issue was color selection...I attempted a Green color first...hated it and re-primed...I tried a blue color...didn't like that either...and so decided to paint the arm a very light base color and then to use a variety of washes and inks to give the arm an interesting color while maintaining a more organic feel vis a vis the Armor.  I'm still not 100% sure about the color but I'm going with it!

Luckily for you I didn't take pictures of all my attempts so I won't too you too much...in fact I have only this one WIP shot of the arm...

After this picture was taken I added one more layer of color with my ancient chestnut ink...which mellowed out the pink a bit and brought us to our final product.

Oh...of course I also painted the "eyes"...and I stuck with yellow for this as I have with most of the other Renegades.

For a figure that I wasn't very fond of at first, I now find myself quite pleased with it overall...he is quite unique...even among the renegades...but some how it all still "works"

Cheers for now...I'll be back with more soon.
