Oathmark: Battles of the Lost Age ...Part IV: Louis' Tale

***Editorial Note*** this narrative story was originally posted in sections along with a detailed battle report.  As the length of those reports got to be a bit excessive I opted to remove the narrative bitz and lump them into a separate post here along with some of the images.

The battle report sections can be found here:  Part I Part II Part III

Louis' Tale

The dust caked Louis' throat as the marched.  The feet of the men and horses in front of him stirred the dry dust from the road surface, and the rest of the column quickly became coated with the fine powder.

...And still they marched.

The Marquis had gotten himself, and the Grand Armee, into a spot of trouble, somewhere off to the east.  And now Louis and his comrades were tasked with bailing him out of his mess.

Rumors had trickled back through the villages about the viciousness of the fighting, along with a trickle of wounded and broken men. Occasionally a dispatch rider returned to the garrison with official news and orders from the Marquis himself...

It was just such a rider that brought the order that had set Louis' unit in motion along with the other companies of men from the Garrison of Rhenes.  He and the other tired, dusty, men had been in motion, seemingly non-stop, for the past three days.  They marched from sun up till nearly dark passing through tiny villages, rich pasture land and rolling hills.  Their halberds and shields growing heavier with every step.  Ahead, to the east, there was war, but here the late autumn sun shown on fields ripe for harvest.

As it grew dark each day le Sergent had found them a field or copse to collapse in.  No fires were lit.  Hard bread and a hunk of cheese were the only sustenance they had, though Louis had managed to procure a mug full of the fortified wine that one of Toby's boys carried in barrel on his back.  Both food and beverage were wolfed down quickly before Louis fell into exhausted sleep, the aching of his blistered feet temporarily eased by the potent wine.

The next morning found them on the road again.  They were approaching yet another small village, really just a cluster of a few buildings and their associated fields.  Louis and his fellow halberdmen were in the middle of the column with a small cavalry unit and a unit of archers with their deadly bows to their front.  Behind were the unit of spearmen, the Rouge Cerf (Red Deer or Bleeding Harts) and finally Toby's lads with their hunting bows and potent wine.

Oathmark: Battles of the Lost Age ...Part III: Game over!

**Editorial Note** Since its initial posting, I have modified a few things and added some details to this post. I also moved the Narrative section to a separate post all together, combining it with the other narrative section from the preliminary post.  The new Narrative section can be found HERE

Hi all,

I'm back with the third and final part of my Battle Report covering my first game of, and initial thoughts on, Oathmark: Battles of the Lost Age.  While I've yet to finish my story and the report...I think that the very fact that this single game has inspired me to write such a lengthy and detailed battle report...as well as an associated Narrative...should give you some idea of what of how much I like this new rules system.

Anyway, more on that later.  Lets catch up the story with our battle report.

The first and second installments of this report can be found here: Oathmark Post I and Oathmark Post II.

Oathmark: Battles of the Lost Age ...Preliminaries

**Editorial Note** Since its initial posting, I have modified a few things and added some scenario details to this post. I also moved the Narrative section to a separate post all together, combining it with the other narrative sections.  That can be found HERE

Preamble

I've got a little something different for you all today...rather than the latest figures I've painted I'm going to share with you my recent exploration of the new set of a Fantasy Mass Combat rules, Oathmark: Battles of the Lost Age.

Oathmark - North Star Military Figures

This new set of rules is put out by Osprey Games and written by Joseph McCullough (creator of Frostgrave).  While I am a die hard WFB 3rd edition fan, I do have interest in a set of mass combat rules that are more simplified and fast moving.  I've dabbled with Dragon Rampant, and Donnybrook but was not over joyed with either and they both had more the feel of a large skirmish game rather than a small unit battle.  Oathmark is the first new set of rules that I've tried that I think will "feel" more like what I'm looking for.

Another Terrain Diversion...Houses! Part IV

Hi all,

In today's post I will finally get to the long awaited discussion on how I painted my ever growing village of buildings for my fantasy table...

...but first I decided to build two more buildings!!! haha...this really is addictive!  I just can't seem to stop adding more structures to my build list.

With my family out of town for the several days I dove into two new structures...one simple...and one the most complex timbering operation that I have yet tackled.  Like the others these two buildings are based on the templates from the Warhammer Townscapes book...in this case they are the Hovel (29) and the Gabled House (33).

Like the others they were first printed out on a color copier and then glued down to foam core.

Another Terrain Diversion Houses! ...Part III

Well...here I am back yet again with another update to an ongoing project....

...namely the houses that I have been building to grace my newly completed Terrain boards.

When last I discussed this project I had completed builds of the Half Timber Cottage, Stone Barn, and most recently the Half Timber House...though none of them have been painted to that point.

As i really enjoyed the build process I pressed on with a couple of other builds as well before I started with the painting.

First I put together a couple of the small pieces from the Warhammer Townscape book...namely the Dog house and the out house.  You may have remembered in my previous discussions that I have been simply cutting out the panels, after mounting them on foam core, and then slapping them together with the sides over lapping.  This has changed the dimensions of the houses slightly by adding in the thickness of two pieces of foam-core to the original dimensions.  That was fine for the larger buildings and may have actually made them a bit more appealing to the eye...size-wise.

...But with the Out house and Doghouse....it was a bad process!  On these small structures the additional 1/2inch of thickness in one dimension drastically changed their over all shape.

the outhouse now appears to be way too long and the Dog house is only suitable in size for pooches of Fluffy's massive girth!!

Have a look

The Doghouse looks more like a mini barn and the Outhouse must be a two-holer to be that big!!

Blue's Modular Table...action Shots

Hi all,

Just back with a quick one today.  Being pleased with the way the water feature turned out on my Modular tile I set about taking a few pictures with miniatures on this tile.  This was a fairly casual photo shoot...and I didn't have any big fancy background to cover up the rest of the room...so you will have to excuse some of the background clutter.

I also have selected pics that show off the water feature...at least a little.  Most of these used my Alamo figures but I also got this one with some fantasy goodness in it

Here is what the photo "set up" looked like...When in doubt add more lights!!!

And here are a few more using my Alamo figures...which really are superb and one day I'll get around to painting some more!!!

All in all it was a fun evening of photography and I'm glad that the tile and the figures work so well together.

Cheers for now!

Blue's Modular Table Part VIII Finishing Touches

Well...Time to get back to my Modular table tiles.  I've been holding onto this one for a while waiting for some computer issues to resolve themselves...and while they haven't really I will just make do with the crap ass computer I'm still dealing with.

Anyway...if you will recall my last blog post about the modular table tiles I was pretty much done...all the rough terrain had been painted and highlighted...and then further enhanced with static grass and tufts where appropriate.  After that I really had two major tasks to complete....
  1. Repair work:  As I was finishing up work on a couple of the tiles I noticed some areas that needed additional attention for them to be considered finished.  More details on these below
  2. Water Feature:  I also needed to suck it up and tackle the two-part resin pour for my water feature.

Another Terrain Diversion...Houses Part II

We've just had a brief warm weather window in VT for my Pond Resin pour...and now things are curing in the warm basement...so that story will be along shortly...and in the mean time here is a follow on to my last post about my distraction by building construction.

After feeling pretty happy with the way that the Half Timbered Cottage came out I set right into making my next building...the Stone Barn.

Once again this is a building that I have the card version that I build from TownScapes back in the Day.  The assembly of this one followed the same procedures as the last and went together much quicker due to the lack of timbering.

Another Terrain Diversion...Houses

Hello faithful reader!

I am forced to pause just before finishing my modular terrain boards due to lack of appropriate working space.  For the water feature pour I need to have stable warmish temperatures for at least a day or two...I also need sufficient ventilation so I don't poison myself and/or my family.  So factoring in those concerns the best place to do that work is in my garage...but it is too cold out there right now.  We are expected to be up in the mid sixties next week...so I'll try to knock that out then.

But...While I've been waiting for the proper conditions needed to finish my boards, I've been keeping myself busy with making some buildings to use on the table when it is finished.

Blue's Modular Table Part VI

Once more into the Breach my Friends!!!

Painting of the tiles continues!  Lets take a look at the next steps.

Following along with the system outlined in the last post I have continued to work into progressively lighter browns for the roads, rocks and rubble on the modular tiles.  The third color to be applied is the VMC Khaki Grey.  For the application of this color I transitioned into actual Dry brushing.  I used a small cardboard box lid as my pallet...I get a little bit of paint on the bristles of a soft 2-inch bush and then work most of it off with several passes on the cardboard.  Then I apply the color to the terrain board with very soft strokes...allowing the color to adhere to raised portions of the texture on the tile while leaving the darker colors in the "recesses" of the texture.

Here is what a couple of the boards looked like after this step.  Once again note that the area of earth color continues to expand onto/into the large green swaths...further breaking up the putting green feel of portions of the tiles.

Chaos Boba Fett! My first Painted Chaos Renegade

Hi all!

Just a quick post to day to share my first ever painted Chaos Renegade.  Honestly I've been somewhat intimidated by these fantastic figures.  There is so much going on with each figure and so many options for color choices that I have been paralyzed by indecision.

That all changed the other day when I was cataloging my Renegade collection and I noticed that one of the Heavy Weapon troopers had a helmet that was very similar in shape to Boba Fett's ...everyone's favorite Bounty Hunter from Star Wars.

INSPIRATION!

A few minutes of Google Image searching later and I had some decent reference pics to work from.

New Recruits for the Oldhammer Gods!

Last Thursday saw me hosting another 3rd ed game at my house which pitted several of my work friends and associated against one another.  After being quite loud during our last game we had been relocated to the garage for this one.  This battle consisted of a combined force of humans and dwarfs commanded by Alex and Cher (with help from Black lab Shelby) squaring off against a Chaos and Greenskin force under the control of Tom, Samantha, and Paul.  The mission was to search a small farmstead located in the middle of the table for an undefined "target of priority."  Once again I didn't take enough pictures or notes to try and produce a real AAR but I thought I would share some pictures just for fun...

Chaos Hound Shelby hopes that little lead men are edible!

Alex and Cher Position their troops...

Watch Out! Paul has a Funny look in his eye! Sam doesn't seem too impressed with her first game...but she loved it by the end.
Cher Advances the Dwarfs on the Goodies left flank...hey girl your chaos attribute is showing! That's some pink hair!
Alex moves some of the human troops into the farmstead...
...out of the cabin run two dwarf treasure hunters carrying a dragon egg!  After them!
The Dragon Company prepares to receive a charge from Goblin Wold Riders (check out my new movement trays!)
The battle was a real defensive struggle...no one had hot dice hands when it came to combat and everyone did when it came to Ld tests...so not much of significance happened for most of the night...until we were all bleary eyed and ready to throw in the towel.  Tom talked us into one more turn...I think this was turn 9 or 10...and then practically the whole left flank of the Good Guys gave way when the three remaining Chaos Marauders broke a unit of Dwarf thunderers...this led too...

...sad Cher.  We all bagged it and went home. It had been a long night!

We could have certainly played a few more turns...we had units that hadn't even gotten into combat yet...and the egg was still escaping off the table...but we were all crispy and ready to call.  It was a fun night and I have recruit a few more minions for my 3rd ed games!

Cheers,

A Brief Update

So the holiday season got the better of me this year and I got little done in the way of hobby over the last month.  That said I thought I would keep my loyal readers (yes I'm talking about you...;) ) up to date on what I have been doing.

Since my last post I've been working on a couple of painting commissions...some of which I hope to share with you soon...some of which will have to wait awhile.  Other than that I got exactly NO painting done...sigh.  I did build a few more units...yes there are more!  This consisted of basing up much of my Chaos force....insert teaser pic

Marauder Thug Regiment with a couple of Citadel Thugs added to mix things up a bit.

More of that force to come in the future.

I also built a couple of mounted units...including this group of Oldworlder Knights (aka 4th ed. Brets)...

Mix of Knights of the Realm, Questing Knights, and Knights Errant.
....sooo....the to-be-painted pile grows to mind numbing porpotions...

...best not to think about it!

I did manage to squeeze in another 3e game with my crew from work.  This battle saw a mostly Empire army (including a few dwarfs and some halflings) facing off against a Chaos War Band that included Marauders, Dwarfs, Beastmen, and a Troll.  This game featured even less painted troops than the last battle and we were forced to rely on very basic scenery...some would call it primitive.  Anyway...it wasn't the most photogenic game but it was a lot of fun and we found out that my co-worker Paul has Magic Dice Hands!  particularly when rolling for missle troops...his empire archers and handgunners mowed down huge numbers of enemy troops in this battle despite a BS of 3.

Here is one embarrassing picture just o prove that it happened...

Sigh...so many unpainted figures and crappy terrain pieces...My Kingdom for more TIME!
So thats been the last month at Blue's house....I hope the next one allows me to make progress on a few of my lead piles and I'll be sure to share pictures with you if it does!

Cheers for now!

Learning to Crawl...Cavern Crawl That is...Part I

Howdy all...

I was away from home doing field work for my job this last week...and I took along some hobby things... I did some painting at nights and when we had a weather day I decided to try something new...actually playing a game with some of my figures!!??!  I know its a crazy idea...But even this old dog can learn new tricks!

Since Gareth the Grot announced his self written set of rules for dungeon crawling called "Cavern Crawl" (see here) I've been itching to give them a try.  They sound like a good low stress and fairly fast set of rules.  I have no experience with Hero Quest or any of the other Dungeon Crawl type games so this is a first for me.

The first order of business was to pick some characters...both good and bad.  As I had grabbed figures fairly quickly as I left on this trip I simply picked four of my favorite dwarf figures and a selection of Orcs and Goblins for them to slaughter...for the Big Boss BadDude I picked a recently acquired Chaos Wizard and a nasty chaos hound for his pet.  The choice of a party composed entirely of Dwarfs kind of misses one of the great points of the Dungeon Crawl games...the diversity of races and classes...but I had to work with what I had.  So I made one of my Dwarfs a "Knight"...one a "Mage"...one a "Barbarian"...and one a "Ranger."  This way I would get a feel for most of the classes...if not the different races.

So lets  meet our Heroes (Fair warning...I'm terrible with making up names...sorry about that...)  Covering the slinging of spells for our heroes is Magnison the Mage

Wielding a a large axe and looking for some heads to crack....we have Yorin Yellowbeard ...the Dwarf Knight

Filling out the Head Bashing section of the party is Yorin's slightly unbalanced brother Florin Flamebeard...Dwarf "Barbarian"

Along for the ride...and handy with a bow is their cousin Dorek...the dwarf Ranger...

On the Side of Darkness...we start at the Bottom with the near worthless minions of the evil tyrant our heroes will be attempting to kill...a couple of Goblins...

Slightly bigger...slightly meaner...and slightly stupider...are the Orc minions... both archers and warriors.

trying to keep a handle on these minions are two slightly meaner Orcs....namely ....Larlog the Lasher (chieftain) and Uorglock (captain)

Defending our villianous leader...and keeping is feet warm at night...is his faithfull pet Fluffy (direwolf)

And finally...the master of disaster himself....Drakenhoff the Dark (Archmage)...

Now that we have met our cast of characters...lets look to the playing area.  As I wanted this to be a fairly fast and furious game I choose to keep the playing area quite small...only a few rooms and hallways...Here is the layout.

Quite a small "Cavern" but it should be big enough to allow me to get a feel for the mechanics of the game...and have a bit of fun in the process.

In the next post we can look at the beggining of the gane in Earnest!

Cheers for now!

Lead Painters League Round 5: Tolkien

Hi all,

I'm running a little behind on posting up the latest round of the LPL figures that I can share with you.  My life has taken a turn into the insanely hectic and its starting to impact my figure painting...I know...its a crime...but cest le vie eh?

Anyway...Round 5 of the LPL was the Tolkien  themed round and it saw some truly amazing entries...if you want some inspiration please take a stroll through the postings...you won't be disappointed.  With this round entrants could earn bonus points for matching the theme...as well as by including a second team of five figures representing an opposing force for your first team.  Yes, that means a total of ten figures for this week...and as usual I was working on them right up till the last possible moment....and beyond....I'm pretty sure I dreamed about this entry even after I had sent the pictures in!

As most of you know my collection of figures is almost wholly composed of classic Citadel and Marauder figures...and not centered on Tolkien figures at all.  Finding myself at a loss for figures to paint...and not wanting to buy a bunch of figures solely for the purpose of painting... I put out a call on CDO asking if anyone wanted me to paint their LoTR figures for them.  Luckily for me a forum member gladly shipped me a box that contained both teams that I needed for this round.

I chose to recreate the scene from Fellowship of the Ring known as the "Ambush at Amon Hen" where Boromir is killed and Merry and Pippin captured by Uruk Hai.  Squeezing all 10 figures into one 800x800 pixel shot was a challenge...particularly at 2:30am with VERY tired eyes.

Here is what I managed to capture

And here are a couple of close-ups showing a bit more detail from the action shot above

Round 6 of the LPL is in full swing and I'm madly trying to get round 7 painted right now.  I've just learned that some fieldwork that had been scheduled to begin in mid May has been moved up to next week...and will last through mid May...sigh....that means I will be trying to get my last three rounds painted and photographed in a hotel room in upstate New York...sigh...we'll see how that goes.  It could be a rough couple of weeks.

Cheers,

LPL Round 3 Entry: Green Orcs and Ham

For round three of the LPL I started a unit that I have been itching to paint for years...MM22 Marauder Orc boar riders. These are the best boar riders ever produced in my opinion. Not only are the riders full of character and style...but the boars are too. Later GW boar riders...like the savage orcs were wonderful figures...but the boars were horrible. Earlier Citadel boar riders were decent figures with decent boars...but to my eye the Marauder ones are the best.

So this entry was a lot of fun to paint and I really look forward to painting more in the future. Without further ado...here they are

And here is the studio shot

Well that's enough for now...got to get back to the painting table...round four is in play now and round five...the Tolkein themed round is on the corks...it's going to be touch and go to get it done and well photographed in time!

Cheers for now.

Lead Painters League Round 1

We have just wrapped up the first round of the sixth Lead Painters League (LPL) over on the Lead Adventure Forum (LAF).  This years 46 contestants facing off on a weekly basis...and let me tell you the quality of the competition this year is quite intimidating...there are many heavy weights on the roster and they always pull out all the stops for the LPL.

Round 1 of this years LPL was a themed round...this time its was "Old Lead"...and to acquire the bonus points for matching the theme the team submitted had to date from before 1991.  Luckily for me that includes almost ALL my figures....that said I picked some of the oldest ones in my collection...a team of Marauder MM20 orcs.  We saw one of these in my Brush Slave League first entry...like those these will form a portion of my Evil Skirmish band that I am working up for Skulldred and/or other skirmish games.

This contest is also one that really appreciated the use of terrain in the photography.  This is a new area for me to explore and I'm learning a lot (mostly the hard way...:)) about what it takes to make an effective shot using terrain.

Here is my entry picture:

Click the picture for the larger version...

It looks like I could do better with the lighting...the guys on the right are a bit shaded for my liking....and the gap from where the hill meets the table annoys me...but other than that I'm pretty happy with how my terrain shot worked out.  One thing I have figures out is...I NEED more terrain...to mix things up and make more interesting pictures.

When it was unclear whether I would get the terrain shot done in time I also took a more traditional "studio" type shot...here is a copy of that.

Sadly these guys did not secure me a victory for round 1.  I was matched up with Drachenklinge's wonderful entry which shows a group of knights in training...complete with training dummies and all kinds of other wonderful little details.  His entry really told a story in a single photograph...mine is more of a studio shot with some stuff in the background....I'll file that lesson away for future use.  It was a very close contest with the final count coming out at 219 to 211 votes...pretty close for such a large voting poll.  Cheers to you Drachenklinge!

Anyway...back to the painting table...LPL round 2 and 3 are already submitted...round 4 is taking FOREVER to finish but I'm almost there...then its on to Round 5...which is the Tolkien themed round...I have 10 figures to complete for that round...and a new terrain board to photograph them on...so back to the grind stone!

Cheers,

Blue
