My First Frost Grave Warband...Don't worry its still Oldhammer!

So there is some interest in the Frostgrave rules in my area and I have decided to start to pull together a warband that I can use during games in which I lose to my friend Roberto...:).

If you are not familiar with what Frostgrave is....well then you have been living under a (hobby) rock for the last year.  Frostgrave is a new Skirmish game, put out by Osprey, that is focused on small warbands, 10 figures or less, led by a powerful wizard and his apprentice as they scour a long abandoned city for ancient relics of magical power.

Being the old lead head that I am I thought that this would be a perfect time to employ some of my long neglected figures in a new and interesting way....while keeping them available for potential expansion into a full fledged army for 3rd edition WFB fun....therefore I will be deploying them on square bases.  BTW there is a fantastic range of figures produced by NorthStar that are specifically for Frostgrave...many of them sculpted by Mark Copplestone...but I couldn't possibly justify buying new figures when I have so many unpainted ones to chose from already...

The Rest of Averland...Part VI...the end....finally

In my last post I alluded to another commission that I was finally able to finish up...lets take a look...

This one was a really joy to work on because it included so many really fantastic classic figures.  I am of course speaking of the group of Averlander's that I have been working on for thebinman for far too long.

I've discussed this group in some detail elsewhere so lets just get into the pictures.

First off is the group that has been completed the longest...a wonderful combination of races that makes for a very evocative little group.

Learning to Crawl....all over again!

Last Friday I was able to convince a group of four friends into playing a game of Cavern Crawl with me.  Cavern Crawl is a fairly simple set of rules under development by Graeth the Grot who has an excellent blog and the rules available here Drums in the Deep.  I messed around with an earlier version of these rules back a couple of years ago (posts about this can be seen here, here, and here) and really enjoyed them...and this seemed like a good time to give them a whirl again.  Since my normal gaming space (garage) is actually being used to store cars this time of year (crazy I know...priorities!) I needed a game that I could easily transport to another location and wouldn't take a long time to set up...Cavern Crawl fit the bill perfectly.

I built our adventure around the basic scenario that Gareth included in the version 2.8 Rules that I would be employing.  In hopes of making things a little more interesting I beefed up the number and quality of enemies in the mission and also buffed my heroes a little bit.  For our adventuring party I chose to play to the figures I had available...this somewhat limited the racial content of the party (I don't have any painted elves or halflings at this point)...but left us with a Human Wizard, Human Ranger, Dwarf Knight and a Dwarf Barbarian.  Against these heroes I pitted a selection of Orcs and Goblins of all qualities, a Troll and a two headed Dire Wolf.

While I was too caught up in the action to take to many photos or copious notes here are a few of the pictures I did take...

Our Party descends into the Cavern and encounters their first enemy...

Averlands Best ...Friend...

Just a quick update to let you know that I hadn't forgotten about the dog for this war band.  I'm starting to block in the colors and the for pattern. I'm going for a Doberman or Rottweiler look.

There is still a long way to go of course.

Cheers,

Blue
