Blue's Year End Re-Cap. 2015...what a long strange trip it's been!

As with many Oldhammer Bloggers this seems to be the right time to review the last twelve months and take a look at what I was able to accomplish and perhaps look to set some goals for the coming year.

I'll look at things in fairly broad categories:
  • Painting
  • Gaming
  • 2016 Goals

Oldhammer in the New World Event Recap Day 2

After the epically long gaming session on Friday night I woke on Saturday and shuffled off to breakfast in a daze.  The water eggs and weak coffee did little to improve my mood...but by sheer force of will I was back down in the event venue by 9:30am...

...and the sight that great me gave me enough energy to carry on through the rest of the day!

After we had all stumbled off too bed, the intrepid Brian K. had stayed up to set up the enormous New Alamo Table that he had built over the previous couple of months.  This amazing set up was front and center in the room and was bound to be the center of attention for the entire day....at least for me.

In the morning and early afternoon....which I only vague recall due to lack of sleep and coffee, there were a number of other games that took place as well.  For one the Green skin horde of Sean S. took on a combined force of Chaos (provided by ABG) and Dark Elves (provided by Adyer).  This game took place on the excellent table provided by Rusty and proved a fun and lively game...unless you were the orcs...in which case there was also a lot of dieing and Running away...

Sadly I failed to capture even a single picture of this game...so I will have to refer you to the excellent report posted by Sean that covers the action in some detail.  It can be found HERE

I believe there were also some other gaming going on...maybe Heroquest...?  Maybe BattleMasters...? Like I said its all kind of a blur at this point.

What I do recall clearly is the siege of the New Alamo!  Brian K. really pulled something special together with this game.  Its sheer size was impressive and the fact that it ran so smoothly for such a long time is testament to the amount of work and forethought that he put into it.  The action was fast and furious with the momentum of battle swinging from one force to the other with shocking regularity...Lets look at some pics!

For Awhile it seemed as though the Orks would obviously prevail...but with stubborn resistance by forces like the Penal Legion seen above and the pesky Space Marines that wouldn't die the battle seesawed back and forth.  At one point Santa Orka Himself mounted the walls and entered the enclosure...only to be jumped by an Imperial Assassin and a Murder bot.

But in the end the Imperial forces were able to maintain control of the central landing platform that was the goal of the attacking forces.

Suffice to say that great fun was had by all and this will go down in my gaming history as one of the best games that I have had the privilege to participate in.

In addition to the Big Alamo game, Saturday also saw the Event painting contest.  There were many fun entries for all the categories and a great number of very well painted figures involved.  Again I apparently forgot to take any pictures of these goings-on and so will have to refer you to ABGs excellent Blog post about the contest.  You can find that HERE

The overall winner of the painting contest was Mike C.  Who entered an amazing RT halfling cook model that was head and shoulders above the rest despite it diminutive size.  As a prize Mike received a large Warhammer as a Trophy.  Being the gracious guy that he is, Mike decided to leave the hammer with us to pass along as the award for the next contest as well...but not before leaving his mark on it for posterity.

The fun didn't wrap up until well after Midnight...and driven out of the room by the thumping bass of the Nigerian Baby Shower that was (inexplicably) still going on next door I scooted up to my room and quickly passed out with visions of burning Drew-bots and imperial murder-bots filling my dreams.

Cheers for now!

Oldhammer in the New World 2015

Howdy all!

Well its time to start spreading the WORD!

The planning for Oldhammer in the New World 2015 is in full swing and its time to start getting people excited about it!

Yes!  I'm talking to You!

"What is Oldhammer in the New World?" You say...

OHNW is wonderful opportunity for us gamers stuck in the New World Colonies to get together for weekend of gaming, painting, and enjoyment of all things Oldhammer.

Basically its a time when we can all fly our Freak Flags high and hang out with a bunch of folks doing the same thing at the same time....yes...its the Nirvana of Oldhammer in this part of the world! :)

This year the event is being held at the Days Inn in Allentown, Pennsylvania and runs Friday through Sunday August 7th-9th.  With this location we will have access to one of their Conference rooms for the entire weekend.  Starting Friday morning we will have this space straight through until Sunday evening.  That means we can game 24 hrs a day if we want to!

So...What will we be doing for all that time?

That's a great Question!

Basically the sky is the limit.  The room we have reserved has plenty of space and there will be enough tables to accommodate most any Oldhammer experience.  And most importantly...if we can drum up enough interest...there will be enough Oldhammerers just begging for someone to game with.  Something that is not a common occurrence in my neck of the wood...So Bring your figures...Bring your rule books...Bring your dice...and most importantly bring your good attitude to Allentown and lets have a game!  (My dwarfs are itching to stomp on your [insert appropriate army name here]!! Will you rise to the occasion?  Or cower in fear of their wicked sharp axes?)

With all this space there will be considerable opportunity for open gaming and pick up matches between interested parties...but that's not all...oh no!  Not by a long shot!

The planning group for this years even have also lined up a number of events and games that will be running through out the weekend.  These will give folks the opportunity to observe Oldhammer in the wild, participate if they are interested, and possibly make something fun to take home for yourself if you are so inclined.

Lets take a look at some of the planned activities for Friday! (these are all subject to change in the run up to the event...and hopefully additional activities will be added as interested parties make their voices heard)

FRIDAY
The centerpiece event of OHNW 2015 will be a weekend long Siege pitting an enormous force of Greenskins against an only slightly smaller number of Empire troops who have opted to (mostly) hide behind some formidable defenses in hopes of extending their puny lives a little longer.  This game will be run by the venerable Orclord of SOL fame and he will supply the troops for both forces from his impressive collection. This Game will kick off at Noon and will continue through the entire weekend.

Also on Friday one of our members will be running several versions of his Bretonnian Frog Hunt game...a GM'd warband-level skirmish game which pits Bret nobles and their retinues against each other and the murderous frogs they hope to have for dinner.  All figures and terrain are supplied for these games as well as a prize for the most successful frog hunter in each game.

Bulldog Lopez (aka "he-of-three-names") will be running a Rogue Trader Demo game all afternoon on Friday as well.  He anticipates being able to run two sessions before the day is through and will have terrain and figures that can be used, though he is also open to GM-ing a "bring and battle" type of game if there is interest/availability.  So load up those bolters and bring out your RT posse.

And Gaming isn't the only planned event going on.  There will also be an Arts&Crafts table set up that will allow participants to design and construct their own Deodorant Tube Hover Tank...a necessity for any proper RT game.  Limited supplies will be available until they run out so bring what you can if you want to take home a tank after the weekend.

Those are the planned events for Friday but there will also be space for open gaming and grudge matches if needed.  There will also be a trade table...and hopefully a vendor or two present.

SATURDAY

The activities will kick off Saturday morning with plenty of open gaming, the trade table and vendors and the acceptance of miniatures for the Event Painting Contest being managed by Adyer.  The painting contest this year will have three categories 1) Single Figure 2) Large Figure and 3) Vintage Figure.  Participants will vie for the honor of winning the Golden Oldhammer Award!

Saturday will see the continuation of the centerpiece Siege game run by Orclord.  Its is hope that by this point the Greenskin hoard will be attempting to break into the Empire fortifications and coming to grips with their Imperial foe.

In addition to the Fantasy siege game there will also be a large Rogue Trader 40k game taking place on Saturday...called Remember the New Alamo!!  This game will find a large horde of Orks commanded by Santa Orka attempting to destroy the uppity Imperials hiding behind the defenses of the New Alamo.  The center piece of this table will be a fairly accurate reproduction of the historic Alamo....but there will be lasers! (pew pew pew)  This is guaranteed to be a wonderful game.

There will also be ample opportunity for pick up games and grudge matches through out the day.

And if you are in a crafty mood...and managed to build a Deoderant Tube Tank on Day 1 of the event there will be time and some materials available to paint up you hover tank.

As the day wears on toward dinner we will have the announcement of the Painting Competition winners...and Losers...lol

the after dinner hours of Saturday will also be open pick up battles and the like but there will also be a large selection of Specialist games available for a quick game among friends.  A number of these "big Box" games will be available for gaming...or bring your own and have a blast crushing your opponent.

SUNDAY
Sunday will find the Big table over seen by Orclord bringing the epic fantasy siege game to a close...the winner will celebrate their victory amongst the bones of their foes!

The conclusion to the Arts and Crafts events for the weekend will culminate in an all out Deoderant Tank Deathmatch with all worthy opponents fighting for the title of "top tank!"

The other centerpiece event of Sunday will the the Warhammer Fantasy Battles Grand Melee! Gm'd by yours truly.  this is your chance to bring your fantasy army and get it on the table with many others in a true Battle Royale!

Of course the trading table and any vendor tables will also be open and hopefully doing brisk business.

The craziness of the weekend is expected to wind down by early evening on Sunday as we all pack up our kit and head home to lick our wounds and begin dreaming of future OHNWs.

So there you have it a full weekend to exciting Oldhammery goodness.  All we need to make it truly great is for you to attend!

Filler Post #2: LPL Replay and Update

Howdy all,

I wanted to take a quick moment and get a post up...life has been truly nutty for the last month...between ever increasing work obligations, weather issues, my kids bringing home various plagues, and trying to get some teams done for the upcoming LPL I just haven't been setting aside the time to write posts.  But today has given me just enough time to get another filler piece together.

Progress on my first three teams for the current LPL has been good...I'm in the midst of final touches on all three of them, then onto basing and starting on the next two teams.  So far I'm fairly happy with where I'm at.

I thought that I would take this opportunity to post up a few of my entries from previous LPLs for your viewing pleasure.  Long time readers of this blog will have seen these pictures before...but will just have to suffer through...:)

To start with here are a few of my favorite Oldhammer Fantasy entries from years past...

Lets start with the Mexican soldiers...who haven't been seen with their completed bases up to this point.

And here are the four Casualty Markers

All Really fantastic figures with a lot going for each sculpt....I see more of these in my future.

Even though I've shown them twice already here are some new individual shots of the Alamo Defenders as well

LPL Round 8: Remember the Alamo!

So...For Round 8 of the LPL I was forced to recycle a team....this was a tough decision...this was the first rerun team I've had to use in the last 3 LPLs...sigh.  There was no avoiding it.

In order to try and freshen it up a bit...I finished the bases and took some new "studio" photos.  Once again just wonderful miniatures...please check out the Boot Hill website it is full of wonderful minis.

Cheers,

LPL Round 5: "They Just Keep Coming!!!"

Hello everyone!  Just a quick post today to keep you all up to date on my 2013 LPL Run.  This week marked the middle point of this years contest....and the pressure is already starting to get to me....well the pressure and my schedule!

Anyway...more on that later....back to the shiny bits.

Besides being the mid-point of the contest, Week 5 also ushered in another of the themed rounds...this time the topic was: Civil War.  When this topic was announced I immediately starting thinking about teams....and I came to the conclusion that I didn't have any figures that could fit this theme.  So that my mind quickly turned to thinking about what historical figures I've seen in the past that I've been itching to paint... and that fit the theme...I quickly settled on the Boot Hill Miniatures Alamo defenders and their excellent Mexican Army figures.

....a brief digression...
"Was the Texas Revolution a 'Civil War'" you ask? well... that's a question for another time...but I would argue yes...uprisings that succeed are called "Revolutions" but hey still represent a country divided and in open conflict with itself...just like a "Civil War"  Anyway....the kind judges at the LPL agreed that it fit the bill so off I went!

....and now back to you regular programming...

I had really enjoyed seeing the greens of these figures posted by Malamute over on the LPL more than a year ago...here was the perfect excuse to buy and paint a couple of packs.  So off to the the interwebs I went...and soon 4 packs of minis were winging their way across the Atlantic to me (thanks Nick!).

Once in hand the figures did not fail to impress.  Both the fantastic Tennesseans and the Mexican troops are extremely clean sculpts and castings with tons of character, I could tell they were going to be a joy to paint.  Both packs are a perfect mix of historical accuracy and a little Hollywood thrown in for good measure.

This being a themed round I had at least 10 figures to paint so I prompt cleaned, primed, and got to work!

Work and life obligations kept painting time to a minimum all week... so I was up till at least 3am on Friday getting thing to a point where I could take a picture and get it sent in....as you can see I didn't quite get the bases done....sigh.  For now I'll just post up my submissionn picture....but you can expect more detailed photos of each figure when I have a chance to get them properly based and re-photographed.

I really enjoyed painting all of these...and though this is not an era I'm really interested in gaming...I see more of these finding their way to my collection and my painting table....

...maybe a diorama...?!

Cheers for now!
