Happiness is an Open Blister....

Today I got to experience something that has become rather rare in my collecting "career".  I received two packages today (no...that's not rare..:-) )...one from a friend in Ireland and one from an ebay purchase...and both were loaded with UNopened Blister packs...7 of them in fact!  Now if you are an old lead head like myself...and I know most of the people reading this are...you probably understand how rare an opportunity this is.

Here they are in all their glory...

I know there is some dispute in the collecting world about blisters...many folks seek these treasures out so that they can keep them intact...forever preserved on a shelf or in a box...never to be molested by human hands.  On one level this seems a laudable goal...but to me it just seems a waste of good figures!  These babies were cast with the intention that they would some day see the table top...and perhaps a lick of paint along the way.  I am NOT a keeper of unopened blisters...nor will I pay extra for privilege of owning one...because...well... I'm just going to open it anyway!

So I took these gems out of the boxes they were shipped in...ogled them through the somewhat discolored and brittle plastic of the blisters...took moment to imagine what path they had traveled since the early 90's when they were cast and packaged away. (hey I'm an archaeologist...thats what we like to do! haha)

 And then....

Well....

I had a lot of Fun opening them!

Ahhhhh...thats better...now the former inhabitants of those plastic cages are free to mingle with the other unpainted members of their units...and dream of a day when they will be wearing a fresh coat of paint and facing off against a worthly opponent across a misty battlefield.

More about the contents of those blisters at a later date...

Cheers,

Blue

  1. Haha - good show and that looks a fine haul! I'm also liking the direction you're going in there ;)

I had some old knights in blisters recently - they didn't stay there long. Mind you any slight vestiges of guilt were assuaged by the poor state of said blisters - they were practically open when I got them!

  2. Bravo! That's how blister packs were meant to be seen - torn open and tumbled about as if it were Christmas morning...

Can't wait to see your Savage Orcs painted up and ready to fight!

  3. I used to have some of those Squires. Can't quite recall what happened to 'em though...

  4. Right on, it's a rare treat getting an unopened blister, but they always get opened! The best one I ever came across was an unopened fianna fimm from the 80's. I swear I could detect a slight waft of 3rd ed as the plastic seal was broken...

    1. Yeah...yours sounds like a true hidden gem...as you can see these were far from ancient blisters...all dating from the early 90's...but still a ton of fun to open!

    I am appalled!

  6. Glad you got to enjoy yourself. I never got into the concept of leaving things (anything) unopened.

  7. Blue,

Are you building an allied force of Bretonnian squires and Savage orcs?

    1. I'll have more to say on this later...but Yes on both points...though instead of seeing them as Brets...in my "world" they are the retinue of an outlying lord with somewhat backward fashion sense...and the Savage Orcs will be part of the ever growing minions of my Chaos dwarf warband.

  8. Ha ha ha, what an entertaining read. I absolutely love that you photographed the opened blisters for all of us to enjoy. Enjoy your new (and I mean NEW) miniatures.

  9. I always love breaking the blisters. There is just something to it when I crack one open. Like you I have been getting a few of theses over the past months so I have been cracking a few open myself.
