The Start of an Orc Horde!

The Chaos Dwarf warband that I am centering around my Marauder MM90s will contain a fairly large number of Greenskin allies (slaves) including, gobblins, orcs, and trolls.  The Orcs pictured here are the start of those allies...some heavily armored Marauder Boys from the MB2 Regiment and few MM25 Orc warriors mixed in.  I really like the "Hun-ish" feel of these guys and like all the Marauder sculpts they are lot of fun to paint up.  I still need to find a few more these figures to complete my unit...so if you have spare MM25s ...or those skull shields please let me know...;)

Here is something a little different...

In the Early 1990s Citadel produced a small range of "River Trolls" ...and I have always loved sculpts.  I've had one of them since their release date but never painted it...so for one of the Golden Hat contests on CDO I decided to paint him up.  I was so pleased with the results that I quickly went online and tracked down the other two...who are now waiting patiently in the Lead Mountain!  There a ton of fun little details on these guys that make them a joy to paint.

Puff and Slash...Ogres?

I recently got my hands on some figures that have been eluding me since my youth....the Marauder MM41 Ogres...to go along with the MS4 Ogre hero that I've had since my childhood.  What makes these particular Ogres so interesting is that they are dressed in the Puff and Slash style...and you know I'm a sucker for that!

Empire Reiksguard

In addition to my many classic Marauder and citadel dwarfs I also have a love for the 3rd edition Empire figures that citadel produced.  The army that I am working toward is a combination of both dwarf and human elements...brought together by a largely Puff and Slash aesthetic.

Marauder Dwarf Handgunners

For the July painting contest over at Bugman's Brewery the subject was "A Squad of Rank and File"...this means a small unit of 5 figures which may include a Champion.  I chose to paint up a group of Marauder Dwarf handgunners...some of my all-time favorite sculpts.  At the request of several members on that forum I also Posted WIP pictures showing some of the stages of my painting process....I thought these would be good to share here as well.

Golden Hat XV Entry

Howdy all!  Sorry for the long delay between posts.  The summer is always hectic in my world and the last couple of months have been proof of this fact.  That said I have managed to complete a few painting and modeling tasks.

One of my favorite Fora on the web is Chaos Dwarfs Online (CDO) where I have been a member for over a year.  The CDO hosts one of the best painting/conversion contests that I am aware of...its called the Golden Hat.  I have competed in several of the contests up to this point but the level of skill exhibited by the members there is unbelievable...not just the painting...but the conversions in particular.  However, the subject of the last Golden Hat XV was a simple Chaos Dwarf Warrior...something that I felt I could achieve with my minimal Green stuff skills.

So I looked to my bits box and came up with a plan.

Some time ago I purchased a large lot of Marauder MM90s Chaos Dwarf figures off of a forum and included in this batch are several that I strongly suspect are recasts.  They exhibit less than crisp detail, deformed weapons, and odd tabs...but I got them at a great price and they were duplicates of figures that I have original copies off so I saved them for times like this.

I started with a recst copy of this figure:

I went after him with a vengence and took off his cleaver blade, his head and helmet and his beard.  After much elbow grease and lots of sawing this is what I had left

And here are the bits that I chose to use to remake my warrior.  You can see his deformed cleaver on the left, In the middle is an extra sallet helmet (with beard removed) that I had from White Knights recent dwarf releases and a two handed sword blade from a broken 3rd edition Citadel Chaos dwarf sculpt.

I started my rebuild by pinning the sword blade onto my models hands and the helmet onto the shoulders.  I used Green stuff to fill in numerous gaps in these areas then started on the beard.  I choose to give my figure a coiled beard for a couple of reasons.  1st I wanted it to look different than the beard that I had just removed...and 2nd it was easier to sculpt..:).  I reffered to a number of great tutorials on CDO and went to town.

When the "construction" was complete I set about to painting.  I've been working on my MM90 unit for about 9 months now and each dwarf has a unique color scheme...like the ones shown in the catalog image I remember from my youth.  So...as I saw this figure joining that unit I wanted a bold color scheme for him too....I settled on Green.....here is the finish product.

My compatriots over at CDO were gracious enough to award me a Bronze metal for my effort.  I hope you like it too.

Miricle of Miricles!!!! I finally got them done!

Well its been a long time coming....and the distractions have been many...Travel for work, Visiting family, Sick Children, Other painting obligations...you know life in general...but I finally found the time to get the last of the preview Dwarfs that WK shared with me done.  As previously mentioned the shield icon for one of the figures has been driving me crazy!!! I removed the paint from it at least 3 time but am now fairly happy with the results...its not quite as smooth as I had hoped but its most of the way there.
